I figured out one major problem I was having that caused nasty porosity. The shells has wasn’t able to get to the mig gun because the whip wasn’t seated.

Now my project making a welding cart is finally making progress.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s good that the project is going. I need more to do than state at a screen while stuck at home.

How are the welds looking?

Kinja'd!!!

My cheapo welder has trouble feeding consistently, so about 30% of the time it turns out poorly.

My welds are a bit lumpy, but not too bad. I'll get a couple pics later.

I’m not an expert by any means but if you’re getting lumps like that your feed speed is probably a bit too high.

Also, in that top one the one corner looks like it’s melted through, that means your heat may be a bit too high, or you lingered too long in that area.

I’m not trying to be overly critical, just give you a few pointers that I’ve picked up. It takes a lot of practice to get good, so keep at it and I’m sure pretty soon you’ll be laying perfect “stack of dimes” beads!

I’m quite sure I lingered a bit too long in places. Feed rate could be an issue, and getting comfortable in different positions will be needed too. Thanks for the pointers.

I’m mostly self-taught, but I’ve gotten a few lessons from a few pros I know. I’m always happy to pass on what I can. I still have trouble picking the right heat and feed, though I’m getting better at it. My problem is I don’t do it regularly so I don’t get a lot of practice.

Learning to weld in new positions is fun, though. A couple months ago I had to repair some exhaust leaks on my Volvo so I got weld upside down! It was exciting!

The better the prep-and the metal, the better the weld. Angle like you have is cheap-for  reason. It aint the best metal in the world. They look fine. If you have some anxiety about how your welds look, start at the bottom where you can’t see. By the time you have the welder zero’d in, they will look good on the top side!

I’m not worried about the welds I showed pictures of. Good penetration, plenty of material.   Others are , uh, not good. And, yes those welds I showed are on the underside of the cart trays. No one needs to see the sloppy newbie work.

I have just got myself a mig and have tried a few testers before I start on my project and to be honest it’s not as easy as I 1st thought.

It’s quite spotty and splattery at the mo..not exactly certain it is set correctly but I’m hopeful more practice and maybe I’ll start getting somewhere

My suggestion is to do some test welds to practice and setup before going to work on your project.

Thank you for the reply.

Ive had a few goes and none are better than the 1st go to be honest...but I’m in no rush so will continue to fiddle about until I get there.

I have tried some tips on you tube but I guess it is trial and error.

Could be a settings thing, may also have to do with how far away you’re holding the torch, or the environment. If you’re outdoors and it’s windy it could be blowing your shielding gas away. Otherwise you may be holding the torch too far away and you’re getting a weak arc, and/or the shield gas is diffusing.

My first ever weld was an attempt to practice two aluminum plates with a Mig welder. As you have guessed it did not go well. They said just grab some plates and practice. Use a mask they said...How hard can it be I thought.....

We used a pro welder for ou r chassis, probably our best decision.

Keep at it. Welds are looking pretty good. When doing MIG, try to avoid going in a straight line. Instead, do C shapes or circles stacked  on top of one another.  Also, avoid welding upside down unless you really hate yourself.
